Purpose

Yonge + St. Clair is one of Toronto’s fastest evolving neighbourhoods and is facing an influx of commercial and residential redevelopments that will bring many changes to the local cityscape and members of its deep-rooted community. The goal of this mural is to create an iconic piece for the neighbourhood that not only beautifies the urban landscape, but remains a beloved icon that embraces the narrative of urban change while still representing the optimistic spirit of the local community.

Themes

The spirit of the Yonge + St. Clair neighbourhood centres around its storied past as a filmic and retail destination, the celebration of its identity as an emergent urban destination in midtown Toronto, its desire to be a modern crossroads for life + work + play, and the embodiment of an energized and inclusive outlook that celebrates all walks of life.

Scope of Work and Mural Parameters

+ Seeking original mural artwork on durable, weatherproof panels optimized to be affixed to the exterior of a building at heights. Lift access or roof access are likely the methods of installation.

+ Sizing of the panels may vary according to artist recommendations, ideally totalling up to 40 ft x 40 ft in total measured surface area. Preference will be given to proposals that offer modular solutions that take into account portability, and flexibility to best fill empty outdoor wall spaces of various sizes and materials. For example, 4 [four] 10ft. X 10ft. square panels

+ Proposals can outline various mural configurations or more than one approach to optimizing the placement of the mural panels.

+ The visual art featured on the mural panels should reflect one harmonious theme.

+ Proposals should take into consideration the short and long-term engineering, material durability, and safety of operations during installation and display at heights.

Criteria

+ Artists are responsible for arranging their own General Liability Insurance

+ BIA retains ownership of the art pieces after the exhibition period. Consultation will occur with selected artist for future configurations and installations.

+ Modular and reconfigurable art pieces are preferred to fit various locations

+ The proposed artwork should address the themes of the neighbourhood as outlined above.

+ Artist must handle all associated costs for installation as provided within the budget.

+ A rough budget breakdown should be included as part of your proposal.

Budget

Artists will receive a $15,000 – $20,000 budget for the total cost of production and installation (includes artist fee and the cost of supplies/materials, transportation etc.) to support the production of their piece. If you are submitting existing pieces, the budget is still valid.

Eligibility

Preference may be given to artists who are available in Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area but all are welcome to apply.
