On Monday October 31st, the LVBIA launched the BikeHere! Liberty Village program consisting of twelve artistically designed bike racks and three clusters of secure bike lockers, all in support of cycling in Liberty Village and Toronto!
Twelve bike racks, consisting of a metal frame with an artistic central panel, have been installed in a few spots in Liberty Village. A December 2010 call for design of the bike rack panels was responded to by about 20 artists. Most artists submitted multiple panel designs for consideration of the Bike Here! Committee. Each winning design was awarded $400. The winning designs were chosen for their artistic interest and connection to Liberty Village, but also for the functionality of the design as a bike rack. “It was important to us that these artistic racks were easily identifiable as bike racks and not solely as public art”, clarified Shelley McEachern, spokesperson for the Bike Here! Committee. “We see value in adding unique but functional public art to the spaces of Liberty Village.”
Three clusters of secure bike lockers have been installed conveniently in the two Green P parking lots of Liberty Village. Each cluster consists of 5 lockers. The lockers can be rented through the Liberty Village BIA at a cost of $10. per month, plus a one-time payable security deposit of $20. The lockers offer protection from theft, vandalism and inclement weather, beyond what would be provided by conventional bicycle racks. The lockers provide an alternative storage solution for those Liberty Village cyclists that haul their bikes into their offices for safe storage. These safe and secure lockers are the first for Liberty Village.
The Liberty Village BIA realized a need to increase the capacity of bike-support infrastructure in Liberty Village. “Bike Here! is a program of the Liberty Village BIA in support of our very healthy and environmentally conscious membership, who prefer to cycle to work“, says Dan Armstrong, Chair, Liberty Village BIA. “By adding bike racks and lockers we’re making it easier for people to choose to cycle, rather than drive, as part of their commute to work”.
The success of the Bike Here! Liberty Village program can be attributed to the coming together of supporters including Live Green Toronto, City of Toronto, Toronto Parking Authority, Ashelron Ltd. and York Heritage Properties. The Liberty Village BIA is very appreciative of the support received and is excited to be able to offer bike support to the many cyclists who work, play and live in Liberty Village.
We hope you can join us to appreciate these functional yet artistic additions to the creative Liberty Village public space. Ride your bike!
